In A Necessary Realism, José Pedro Cortes renews his way of looking at the matter and surface of the world. Through a set of photographs taken between 2005 and 2018, Cortes looks at the representation of the body in this complex and vulnerable time.
In contrast with neoliberal realism, his images affirm the necessity of not allowing ourselves to be subordinated to pragmatic vision of life, because reality is not mechanic, linear or numerical, but a challenge that demands daily attention and reflection.

Throughout the book we come across men and women who look at us, others who sensually caress each other in bed, or we observe a group of friends languidly relaxing on the lawn, on a summer’s afternoon. There aren’t any geographies or time scales, and, as observers of José Pedro Cortes’ photographs, we are voluntarily invited to make fast, slow, intense movements, which go in and out, attempting to find life, but also the skeleton, ruin and remains that time leaves in its wake.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition Um Realismo Necessário at Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado in Lisboa (from 28.06.2018-28.10.2018).  More about the exhibition here.

Once upon a time, I, Chuang-Tzu, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Tzu. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man. Between a man and a butterfly there is necessarily a distinction. The transition is called the transformation of material things.
Chuang-Tzu

In the middle of the sea, somewhere between Manhattan and Staten Island,  a man follows me.
André Príncipe, in Non-Fiction

Published on the occasion of Príncipe´s major exhibition to date, in Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimarães, Portugal), Non-Fiction is a heartfelt reflection on how to use photography.
The book combines photographs with entries of a dream diary done in the last twenty years. Together with many new images, we revisit Príncipe´s adventure photos from different series, and we learn more about them, where and when they were made, how do they relate to each other.
Non-fiction is what you experience with your eyes open, what you eyewitness. It is historically or empirically factual. Non-fiction is Príncipe´s photography. Fiction is what you see with your eyes closed, your dreams, what you imagine. In the book, the photos and text interact in mysterious, humorous, significant ways. Non-fiction becomes so close to fiction that it can be only defined by its negative, like a human is a non-monkey, or a man, a non-woman. Things are transitional. Half of the poetry of life would be gone, if we did not feel that life was either a dream or a stage in which the actors seldom realised that they were playing their parts. It´s about what we call reality.

The new book by António Júlio Duarte, shows us a sequence of images shot in the Summer of 2015, on the set of Colo, a film by Teresa Villaverde.
Ensaio   the word in Portuguese means both essay and rehearsal – is a melancholic study about the mechanisms of identity construction. It revolves around a group of teenagers and their need to preserve a sense of purity threatened by a world of adults in crisis.
Desire, uncertainty, a need to take risks are the driving forces behind a quiet angst that only eases in contact with nature.
Like in a rock song, AJD is at  the eye of the storm, where things  can be observed more peacefully.

Concrete Octopus takes off where Kanemura´s 2002 acclaimed Spider's Strategy left.  For the first time, Osiris and Pierre von Kleist team up to show Kanemura´s new work done between 2011 and 2013. The cult Japanese photographer proves to be in great shape.  With a text by Chris Fujiwara, a film critic living in Tokyo.

It would be strange and misleading, though obviously not wholly inaccurate, to call these photographs “images of the Japan of the present time.” Though they might perhaps have much to say to the social historian, their documentary function is circumscribed by the interest in exploring a visual universe too disunited and incomplete to be recognizable as a cultural or historical form. In these images, the world presents itself with great purity and without provocation or seduction, as though poised in the interval before the repetition of an already forgotten catastrophe.

Chris Fujiwara

Osamu Kanemura (b.1964) is a photographer born and based in Tokyo. Since 1992, he has had more than twenty solo exhibitions in Tokyo, New York and other cities. OKINAWA
On the southern tip of Japan, Okinawa is an archipelago that floats in the beautiful ocean. In ancient times, seafarers plied the oceans to Japan and other countries, while a unique island culture flourished. However, Okinawa did not escape the wave of modernity that washed over the islands. Many lives were lost during World War II. Okinawa was ruled by the USA for 27 years and huge US military bases still dot the landscape. For hundreds of years, generations of my maternal ancestors were born, raised and died on these islands. My spirit gravitates toward this archipelago. I want to live in the present and capture the Okinawa that lies before me today.

You´re Living for Nothing Now ( I hope you´re keeping some kind of record) is André Príncipe´s take on the I-novel, a personal account about how it felt to be alive between 2009 and 2013. With its Leonard Cohen line´s title, Príncipe´s most ambitious work to date is organised in three books designed to be autonomous but that read best when together. The classical music score format of his earlier books is revisited and this time the images center on his struggle with marriage, living in Lisboa, spending time in China, Turkey, Japan, Paris, London and other places.
The new layout alternates spreads assembled in minimalist comic book style with full bleed spreads, emphasising the narrative, cinematic nature of the images and ultimately creates a strong musical feeling, with pauses, andantes, adagios and crescendos, reading like a visual symphony.
Influenced by sufi and buddhist ideas, You´re living for nothing now Book 1, 2 and 3 is a compendium of gestures, a modern mandala, an elegy of the ephemeral in the tradition of Ed van der Elsken, Henry Miller, and Jonas Mekas.

An eternal scene lies within a moment.

Família Aeminium is a new book by filmmaker Pedro Costa and sculptor Rui Chafes.
A mysterious sequence of photographs done during the exhibition Família conceived by the artists for the Roman Cryptoporticus in the city of Coimbra.

The Cryptoporticus, suspended in time, vacant and silent, was once a lively and vibrant forum.
The sculptures and the images living in these distant chambers, recall the lost gazes, the memory of whispers and movements.

One's Own Arena is the final moment in Cortes´ sense of place Trilogy, after Things Here and Things Still to Come (2011) and Costa (2013). This time his territory is Toyama, Japan.
As the title alludes, Cortes creates an arena of visual relationships, portraying men and women in their own circle of confidence and the city’s dark alleys, bars, plants and objects. All is mixed among sequences of intimate images of women in his hotel room, working as studies of the body, a trademark of his work.
Key to the exploration are the surfaces, the superficiality of things, as photography is, by nature, superficial. Skin, texture, light and shadow and even film itself is revealed as the essence of what is to be known.
This is Cortes 4th book with Pierre von Kleist editions after Silence, Things Here and Things Still to Come (featured in Photobook: A History vol.III) and Costa.

Living as a kind of job, as something that needs its own rules, as if it were a task in some office and the need, at times mechanic and bureaucratic, of organising time: to wake up, to eat, to think, to work, to sleep, to live.
Yesterday, today, tomorrow.

This Business of Living is inspired by the diaries of Cesare Pavese, about the experience of time and of the memories that are left over from the passing days.
This is Daniel Blaufuks' new book with Pierre von Kleist editions after Fábrica, published in 2013.

Lisboa, Cidade Triste e Alegre’, originally published in 1959, is a symphony about Lisbon of the fifties, showing the city in its different aspects. The “graphic poem”, as Victor Palla and Costa Martins liked to call it, constructs a new city with (photographic and poetic) images, a city in the process of assimilating an international style.

The photos are very modern, grainy, taken in a fast way, choosing spontaneity and instinct to artifact and composition. According to Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, who included this book in "The Photobook: A History, vol.1": 'Lisboa is particularly notable for using many of the book-making ideas developed by William Klein, and Dutch photographers like Ed van der Elsken and Joan van der Keuken, and has a vibrant, cinematic feeling'.

This new edition follows exactly the first edition, including text and poems by Rodrigues Migueis, Alexadre O’Neill, Armindo Rodrigues, David Mourão-Ferreira, Eugénio de Andrade, Jorge de Sena and José Gomes Ferreira.

It also includes a supplement with an introduction by Gerry Badger and a full transcription into English of the book’s index, where the authors explain in detail the making of each image.

During the course of the production preparation for his film 'Casa de Lava' (1994), portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa compiled what he saw, what he read, his many ideas and images into a scrapbook instead of a screenplay.
Paintings, movie stills, letters, newspaper articles, scribbles, quotes from novels, postcards, lines of dialogue, snapshots, that guided him throughout the shooting of the film and that he continued - and finished - after returning to Lisboa.
This green covered notebook became an autonomous object, a visual record of Costa's way of thinking.

Traces of a Diary is a cinematographic travel journal. Through a series of encounters with some of Japan’s most significant photographers, the directors reflect on the nature of creating images, telling stories and the diaristic process. Filming with two 16mm Krasnogorsk 3 wind-up cameras, Martins and Príncipe value the rawness of spontaneity and contingency over studied treatment. Both a diary and a reflection on the diaristic genre.
Traces of a Diary is a personal view on some of today’s most important photographers and the city they photograph.
With Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, Takuma Nakahira, Hiromix, Kaiji Syoin, Kohei Yoshiyuki and Gerry Badger.

14 kms south from Lisboa, where I live, is Costa da Caparica.
During the last years I often found myself returning to this magnetic place.

José Pedro Cortes

Costa da Caparica is a place, south of Lisboa - a strip of land that exists between the last stretch of civilisation and the beach.

In COSTA, we wander through this territory: shacks, outmoded architecture, remains of houses, dirt left by the tide; an agglomeration of sand, vegetation and streets – a peripheral, end-of-the-line location. We are flooded by a strange luminosity; a dazzling and mysterious light which imbues these spaces with a disconcerting and unreal atmosphere, like something seen while in a hypnotic state, encouraging the spectator to participate in a suggestive and paradoxical exploration of individual experience.

During nine months I lived in Tel Aviv. During this period I met four young Jewish women who were born in the USA. They had all decided, at the age of 18, to go to Israel to do the military service. After completing the required two years of service, they decided to stay and live in this idyllic Middle Eastern city.
José Pedro Cortes

The images of four women are interspersed with landscape  and detailed views of the city - old cars, over grown palm trees, porticos, puddles of water.. Mixing color and black&white, hard flash and natural light, this book creates a sense of ambiguity placing the viewer in between the intimacy of the portraits and the deserted city of Tel Aviv.

In 2012 André Cepeda spent three intense months in São Paulo, exploring and photographing the city while reevaluating the very nature of his practice.
The thrill of discovering a new territory, the endless photographic possibilities and the buzz of the city in contrast with Cepeda's distinctive silent style, reveals the author's work in a completely new light. The result is a warm, colorful labyrinth of this megacity -  its places, streets, architecture and people. Cepeda's managed to create his own São Paulo.
Rua Stan Getz reads like a sensual dream that feels real.

From the artist's notebook:
“ (...) spitting on the ground, pissing in the street, the sound of the saxophone that vibrates and endures and dilutes as I write alone in the studio in São Paulo thinking about the city streets...the decision to turn left or right or to go straight ahead is fascinating and physically demanding. The unexpected and the discovery in every minute that passes; everything is new and the will is strong. I want to be on this endless path, I want the streets to speak to me and teach me how to look and tell me how I should act. it's the images that guide me and make me see what I want to see and discover what I have never seen (....)”

'Smell of tiger precedes tiger' is an existentialist travelogue.

André Príncipe travelled from Lisbon to Tokyo by land and by sea, with a desire to escape, to go places far away. The initial feelings of uneasiness and alienation fade as empty bars and hotel rooms give place to windows of trains and the vastness of the desert, and return as we approach the Asian big cities. The strongly cinematic sequence was designed to be read from right to left as well as from left to right, expressing the circular aspect of the journey.

'I was already far away, in a city, and wanted to go to the mountains. Asking around, I came up with a phone number. I told him where I wanted to go and where I came from, and in his very poor English, he managed to tell me that he'd never seen a Portuguese, even though his grandfather had been half-Portuguese. He also told me it would be okay to go with him. We were quiet most of the time, walking through the forests. "Eat, sleep now, stop," he would say, and then he would smile. It was difficult for him to understand my question, but when he finally understood, he said, "Smell of tiger precedes tiger." I was astounded at his sudden mastery of English. He said nothing more. For the next hours we walked in silence. Our footsteps echoing through the forest.'

“I feel that the sentiment drawn from fiction is no less authentic, pungent and lasting than what the best in reporting is capable of documenting.” - Pedro Letria

The Club is an experiential journey through the Portuguese Social Clubs in the Providence, Rhode Island; a journey in which photography and writing are the primary actions. Along its course, Pedro Letria looks at his own displacement as a Portuguese national in the United States through the plural manifestations of Portuguese immigrants in their spaces of communal togetherness.

Pedro Letria was born in Lisboa, Portugal, in 1965. A photographer and graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design, Pedro Letria has authored 6 books resulting from personal long term projects. His work has been widely exhibited in and outside Portugal.

Dark alleys, blocks of cement, tired naked bodies, strings that lead to nowhere, abandoned tubes.
Rien, the new André Cepeda book, is an immersive experience. Page after page we are led into a void where all things seem to have lost their name, creating a restless and suspended time. More than looking at physical spaces, we feel as if in an endless present tense. There is Emptiness, but a desired one.

Cepeda makes the beautiful more white than black large format photographs look spontaneous and free.

A book about the process of photographing, about film.
A desire to touch and enlighten all things around us.

António Júlio Duarte has been photographing casino's lobbies in Macau for the last 10 years.

Shot at night, with a medium format camera and a flash, often in jetlagged mode, the lobbies became Duarte’s personal territory. The absurd luxury of the places combined with the strangeness of the objects, and the absence of human presence, creates a strong dreamlike feeling. We are led through a labyrinth, as if floating.

Thia work is both an important document about the little seen reality of Casino’s in Macau today, and a very personal reflection about East and West, about how to relate to the world through photography.

Everything can be changed.
Everything can be turned into poetry.
A lot can be accomplished with two pairs of hands, without the need of a boss or money.

This is a story that took place under a pier on the outskirts of Malmö between January and May in 2009. This book documents a street art project done by photographer Nils Petter Löfstedt and Erik Vestman. Having discovered an empty space under a pier in Malmö, Sweden, Löfstedt and Vestman worked for 5 months to convert this anonymous concrete interior into an inviting room.

Bringing building supplies to the pier by bike and working mostly at night by the light of headlamps, Löfstedt and Vestman squeezed between the rocks beside the pier to enter and build the space, cleaning it of debris, rocks and seaweed, painting the walls white, framing out and laying a parquet floor, adding a door and window and ultimately creating a beautiful space in a magically unexpected location.  What they created has been called "Sweden's most secretive and at the same time widely discussed street art projects."

The book also includes a DVD with the film "The Pier", directed by Nils Petter Lofstedt, documenting this whole process and the use of the space by theirs friends.

"I was in Japan for the first time. In the night, confined to unfamiliar rooms, I would look at myself, with only the alien sound and images from local TV as a companion, I was lost and felt a need to look at the simple things around me, objects, in an attempt to map a familiar reality, trying to hold on to the idea that things were still the same."

Deviation of the sun is a work about gravity, the ultimate force of placement. I decided to produce it as a book so as to free the images from the vertical decisiveness of the wall, giving the viewer the freedom to look at these images from any given angle and position, and most importantly, from familiar places of their own, at their own pace and rhythm. The viewer is thus in a position to explore the unfamiliarity of these images, and to question their placement, from a familiar vantage point."

In 2009 André Príncipe and Marco Martins travelled to Tokyo to shoot a film about elliptical narratives and the importance of the diaristic practise in Japanese photography.

During a month and in a totally improvised way, the Portuguese filmmakers shot hours of 16mm footage and thousands of photographs of their daily life as well as their encounters with photographers such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Daido Moriyama, Takuma Nakahira, Hiromix, Kohei Yushiyuki and Kajii Syoin. Traces of a Diary was shown in film festivals around the world and received the jury prize at Documenta Madrid.

Initially, the film was going to be a mixture of still photographs and 16mm material but during editing it was decided that only the moving images were to be used. About one hundred rolls of Tri-X 400 film remained in a box, unused. These photographs are now revisited in Tokyo Diaries, a book that is as much about photo books and the way we read them as it is about Japanese photographers. Special appearance by legendary designer Kohei Sugiura.

"It was 1997 and the new millennium was imminent, one could feel the tense anticipation about what was to come next.
I was alone in Japan, a place I had never been before. During the day I would go out looking for my own sense of the place, photographing, exploring notions of center, a place of convergence, as the world expanded before me in its uncertain course.
Many years have passed and I felt a need to go back to these images. The millennium is long gone but the vertigo of uncertainty is yet to disappear."

“One cannot walk through an assembly factory
and not feel that one is in Hell.” - W.H. Auden

Fábrica, a new book and film by photographer Daniel Blaufuks, is a collection of images composed into an expanded scenery of memory, a walk through the abandoned spaces of one of the largest factories in Europe in an once flourishing industrial region, that never recovered from the loss of the textile market to the Chinese exports.

Blaufuks worked the book and the film (which comes with this edition) as a documental piece, collecting different kinds of memories, crossing old photographs, manuscripts and objects with images of the present state of the building interiors and surroundings.

The result is a reflection not only on the idea of a 'factory' in itself, most generic and abstract, but also about forgetting and abandonment, thus creating a significant memento about labor and the disappearance of the working class in Europe in the last century, which is one of the reasons for the present crisis in the region.

O Perfume do Boi (translated: "the perfume of the bull") was shot during a three-month anticlockwise journey around Portugal's borders.

Outside cities, out in the fields and in the woods, in small town circuses, with the lunatics and the acrobats. The very strong narrative feeling comes with an equally strong suspicion that there might be no story. The photos of the animals and people combined with the natural elements, cause a sense of eminent danger and trouble. There is an aura of prophecy and myth, and in the end we are left with the echo of a cry in the night.

"The Japanese five elements are, in ascending order of power - Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void", says the author.

The first two books of this series are sold out: MASTER AND EVERYONE and I THOUGHT YOU KNEW WHERE ALL OF THE ELEPHANTS LIE DOWN. This trilogy of titles were designed like classical music scores.

I Thought You Knew Where All Of The Elephants Lie Down continues André Príncipe's exploration of photography as a way of knowing reality.

The book has a strong narrative feeling, with two distinctive parts; a very precise sequence of images of girls and animals is followed by a hazy, dreamlike worldview.

An existentialist travelogue that defies the idea that there are pots of gold at the end of the rainbow.

The book's title refers to Leonard Cohen song.
This is the second book of a triology including two other titles: Master and Everyone and O Perfume do Boi.
These books were designed like classical music scores.

Master and Everyone' presents a sequence of photographs - mostly portraits -  reflecting on photography’s right distance to its subjects and the master/ student relationship.

JFB: Somehow, I got the feeling that you were asking 'Where are the masters? ... who are they? ... and what are they doing? "… and this feeling that the answers will be found in unexpected places.
AP: Sure, that’s it. Till you stop looking, and you’re just doing your thing.
--- a conversation between João Francisco Barreto and André Príncipe.

This is the first book of a triology.

'Silence' explores contemporary urban emotions like loneliness and anonymity.
The book evolves in a constant dialogue between private and public situations.

José Pedro Cortes’s work in this book deals with the struggle of accessing human presence in the contemporary city – a silent and layered presence hidden behind the surface of things or people; that always seems distant to the viewer. These ideas of blockade and intimacy are played together in a book structure that borrows ideas from film or literature.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition with the same name by André Cepeda in Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporanea – Museu do Chiado, in Lisbon from May 7th to September 26th of 2016, Depois is Cepeda´s third book in PVK editions.
This book / catalog gathers a series of recent photographs by André Cepeda, taken in Porto the city where the artist lives and a recurrent topic of his work.

The collection of images suggests a physical – and mental – journey through various sites in a city where human presence is residual. Nothing appears to happen in these places.

During this journey,  André Cepeda photographs a wide range of subjects, including deserted streets, the facades of buildings, rudimentary constructions, monuments, ruins, and abandoned materials and objects in settings permeated by melancholy and a sense of emptiness. It is a view that is harsh and sensitive, meditative and critical, which reacts to space, matter, and light, bestowing certain places and objects with a character that is at once familiar and strange, banal and mysterious. Nothing appears to happen in these places.

Depois is a work about what remains, but also about our desires and about what we are prepared to see in and make of the images.
